I think I have figured out the allure of my pinhole camera. Generally pinhole cameras have extreme depth of field due to their small aperture. Everything from the closest object to the farthest mountain are in sharp focus. Through a defect my pinhole renders everything the same shade of fuzzy. The effect of this in this photo is 1) the picture looks older than it really is, and 2) it obscures the details. The quality reminds me of pictures taken in the 70’s that have faded a bit over time. Maybe they weren’t tack sharp to begin with either. The lack of focus obscures details such as the golfers behind the pond teeing off at Old Trail. Lending to the perception that this photo wasn’t taken yesterday, which it was.
I think the next step in this project is to turn the camera on the new. See what effect I get when photographing obviously new housing subdivisions, the kind where every third house is the same.
