I interrupt this regularly scheduled blog to bring you this important announcement. Charlottesville drivers suck!
I log about 20,000 miles annually well over half of which are for work. This week I have been tailgated, cut-off, stuck behind left lane vigilantes, and general disregard for the turn signal. Charlottesville is starting to remind me of working in Jersey. The one good thing about Jersey drivers is that you knew they would try to screw you over. It was at least a predictable nightmare. Here, I can never tell what is going to happen from one driver to the next.
I want to review a few quick basics:
One of my biggest peeves, move over so merging traffic can do just that, merge.
Use your turn signal. Its so simple. It is that stick on the left side of the steering column that may or may not currently be stuck up your ass.
If you are barely competent to operate a motor vehicle, don’t tax yourself. Put down the phone. Yes, that is aimed squarely at UVa students.
In addition, students, please look both ways before stepping into the crosswalk. I know you have right-of-way, I want to let you pass, but give me more than a half second notice. I know that phone call is important, but so are your legs.
The left lane is for passing. Don’t be the jerk who goes five under the speed limit for twenty miles in the passing lane.
That’s all for now, but I am headed back on the road. I am sure I will have a few more when I return.
I’m with you on this one – we have some terrible drivers around here. About merging, though, it does go both ways. Too many times I have seen people come off an on ramp and try to wedge themselves into a solid two-lanes of traffic. (29 to the 250 by-pass, I’m looking at you…) This always results in a slowdown and backup. Yield means yield – wait for a safe gap and then go.
Ever noticed the cellphone-Volvo connection?
It’s those damn jackasses who are busy taking pictures and driving at the same time that are causing all the problems in this town. 😉
